Blue Mountain History

Alpine Blue Mountain ski resort was founded in 1941 by Jozo Weider and Peter Campbell. Jozo Weider and his family emigrated in Canada from Hungary at the beginning of the Second World War. He was a bartender, a mountain guide and photographer. After immigrating, became an instructor Ski Quebec, where he met a promoter named Peter Campbell, and the two formed a partnership for the Blue Mountain.

Jozo Weider moved with his family at the base of the mountain and supported by agriculture during the summer months and work on the ski resort in winter. The three original ski race were approved by the hand. They were called Schuss, grandmother, and Kandahar. The lift consisted of two sledges which were installed on the hill by a cable, and cable was powered by a motor truck.

Milestones

1948: An agreement was signed with the Toronto Ski Club lease of 999 years for the use of your vacation. Weider also purchased over 150 acres, then open another area ski called Apple Bowl.

1949: The barn is located at the base of the Apple Bowl has become the ski barn. This was the main day lodge.

1955: The Ski Barn has been sold to finance the cost of a poma lift was placed between Schuss and works great grandmother.

1959: Blue Mountain was the first ski resort Ontario to open a ski lift. The elevator has been called The Old South chairlift.

At that time, the slopes of Blue Mountain is now covered 2 ½ miles.

In developing the ski slopes, Jozo Weider had realized that the earth was mostly clay. As a hobby, began making pottery with clay. This eventually became a new company called Blue Mountain Pottery.

1960: with the improvement of ski equipment and the economy, skiing has become in a major sport in Ontario. As a result of increased business, inn twenty room opened.

1966: Blue Mountain Pottery Weider sold to finance another major expansion at Blue Mountain. Three double chairlifts were installed and opened a new hostel called Base Lodge Centre.

1971: Jozo Weider died before the expansion project was completed. His son, George Weider took control of the company. Later, George became president and accountability through the daily management of the city Jozo son-in-law, Gordon Canning.

1973: A rental ski and Repair opened, and installed artificial snow has been important.

1977: Blue Mountain Blue Mountain Slide tower which was built a summer activity. Two 2,000 feet (610 m) long pieces mini-sled was built for the sledges which were established in the corridors of Teflon or single wheel.

1979: The lights were installed on the Big Baby and O-Hill to allow night skiing.

At the end of 1970 there were 17 lifts, including five double chairs, six apples, a T-bar and a tow rope.

1980: Blue Mountain again expanded with the opening of the slippers Osa slide. This new slide linked to the original Blue Mountain Ride Slide.

Georgia has acquired the Peaks Club is a small station Ski northwest of Blue Mountain. It has the largest vertical drop in Ontario and for advanced skiers. This company was not a successful business and peak back to a private ski club in 1987.

1981: The Blue Mountain Inn opened to accommodate the growing number of tourists more.

1984: A journey underground has been added to existing activities from the water during the summer.

1988: Central and South Base Lodge Base Lodge was renovated.

1997: Walk the tube was replaced by a water ride called improved rider Raft.

1999: Blue Mountain Tour slides were permanently closed.

Major Changes

1999 was the year that Intrawest Corporation bought 50% of the Blue Mountain Resort property. Following this acquisition, another important element of the expansion began.

With Intrawest Corporation in the image, the Blue Mountain Resort has expanded to include:

Four high-speed chairlifts have six seats was built to relieve congestion in the elevators.

Blue Mountain Village with European style cabinet Intrawest has been built. The village consists of condominiums, hotels, a conference center, restaurants, shops and many other services.

Mountain biking in the hills open during summer months and a climbing wall, hiking trails, private beach, water park and golf course.
